Book Reviews serve to give us a glimpse into a book. On our website we have a number of other book reviews here as well, and even if the reader does not have time, resources or the inclination to buy the books, much can be learned from a good review. Of course we always encourage people to acquire books – hard copy – as nothing can replace the depth of knowledge gained from the real thing, plus it is good for posterity when these books exist in physical form in many different private libraries in many places around the world. It makes it harder to erase history.

Other Losses
An Investigation into the Mass Deaths of German Prisoners at the Hands of the French and Americans After World War II

In 1989 a book titled Other Losses was written and released by a Canadian historian named James Bacque. It related the German experience at the end of World War II and several years beyond. The focus is primarily on the treatment of German soldiers who surrendered in droves in the last few months of the war. They surrendered because they felt the war lost and it was preferable to surrender to the Americans, British, and French who were signatories to the Geneva Convention. They feared the Russians because they had not signed the Convention and their behaviour in the captured eastern German territories defied description in terms of brutality.
It is surprising that this book was published at all and made it into bookstores, because in today’s world any kind of revisionist history relating to WWII is carefully watched and censored by the gatekeepers. But because it was released, it caused a sensation in the media, and they were very quick to denounce it as “flawed”. They didn’t say it was incorrect, just flawed. I would say that is the condition of all published history. It is indeed flawed, and it is the job of historians to revise the history to a more truthful state. This is what James Bacque was doing. A state of objective truth in history, I believe, is not possible, so it is always open to question. There is such a thing as “historical facts” but by themselves they don’t create any public interest. They are dates, names, documents, minutes etc. They can enter into the historical record, but they are not history. History is the gathering of historical facts, the avoidance of others, some exaggeration, lies, selective word usage, and out of that comes a story which we call history. It is very readable and for those with an interest in the past it becomes educational and a pleasure to read.
Flawed history is the norm, and it is no reason to dismiss Bacque’s book. James Bacque highlights a very important example of the avoidance of certain facts. There have been thousands of versions of World War II, but the majority follow a common theme: An evil dictator beguiles a nation of talented, cultured, and intelligent people and convinces them that they are a master race that should rule the world. They believe him and start a war of conquest, but the rest of the civilized world could not stand for that, so they destroy the evil dictator and his nation and everyone lives happily ever after – even the vanquished. That appears to be the history that has been accepted. People like the story so much that they are quite anxious to do it again. The new Hitler is always being sought out: Saddam Hussein, Gadhaffi, Assad, Putin. Nothing more noble than to put an end to another Hitlerian tyrant.
The fact that Bacque’s book may have had flaws is irrelevant because all historical books have them. Bacque is giving us the history that has been “avoided” by other historians. By telling that part of the story, he can point out that the noble people that took on the dictator and whipped him were not that noble after all. The accepted version of World war II now becomes a fairy tale. Fairy tales are nice and we tell them to children, but as adults, we should seek out the truth by exposing lies, or should we continue embracing the fairy tale?
The number of captured and interned German soldiers at war’s end who died gruesome deaths in captivity, numbers somewhere beyond one million. The German soldier’s faith in the Geneva Convention (which they largely followed) was betrayed when, with the stroke of a pen, Eisenhower classified German POW’s as DEF’s (Disarmed Enemy Forces) which dis-entitled them to the protection of the Geneva convention. They were left to die in open fields surrounded by barbed wire, deprived of food, water, shelter and medicine. Any civilian trying to bring them food was shot. Eisenhower’s hatred of Germans was no secret. This wholesale murder of prisoners of war extended to the regular population as well.
The first post-war Chancellor of Germany, Conrad Adenauer, was never pro-Hitler, but as the mayor of Cologne, he seemed a relatively harmless choice for the job. In 1949 he drew attention to the expulsion of 15 million Germans from the eastern provinces and beyond. He stated that 6 million of them had not arrived. The implication is that they were murdered on the trek back to a destroyed Germany. Adenauer was pro German, unlike most of the Chancellors that followed him like Willy Brandt, Helmut Kohl, and Angela Merkel. Germany has been beset by traitors to their people after the war. The occupiers have ensured that Germany remained subjugated, guilty, and humiliated to this very day, by installing these leaders. To this day Germany has never signed a peace treaty with its WWII enemies. They are merely a vassal state of the US. and take their orders from them. They ensure that German history will be the version they impose on them. James Bacque threw a wrench into the works with his exposure of allied crimes against the German people. These talented, cultured, and intelligent people have had their soul destroyed and are ashamed of themselves because of the history they have been forced to swallow by their conquerors. Their birth rate is extremely low and many Germans marry into other races and ethnic groups because of this self loathing.
James Bacque’s book has now become a documentary movie which can be viewed on BitChute. It is a piece of history that needs to be examined, or we will continue to live a fairy tale. To move ahead we need to embrace reality and not fairy tales. Watch this movie or read his book, and with greater truth we can move forward. There is no doubt that the world today is in tremendous turmoil and is headed for destruction. The only thing that will set us free is the truth. A good place to start is to re-examine the pivotal event of the 20th century -World War II. There are now legal punishments for doing just that in Western countries, most notably in Germany. It means that the forces that won WWII are still in power and are intent not just on destroying Germany but the rest of the Christian western world. Wake up! There is no more time to sleep.

This is real history that needs showing and telling.Perhaps ,instead of school children being sent on propaganda tours of Auschwitz etc as they are here in Europe they could be sent on Rhine Meadows death camp tours to see just who did what to whom.

Die Deutschamerikaner haben während des Krieges feige ihren Mund gehalten und die Propaganda der amerikanischen Regierung nicht ausgebremst. Deutschamerikanische Mütter haben ihre Kinder nicht zweisprachig erzogen. Sie haben in einem Akte der Mißachtung das viel reichere Deutsch, Sprache der Dichter und Denker, gegen die verarmte angelsächsische Abart des Deutschen, welches sich Englisch nennt, eingetauscht. Oft erinnern nur noch ihre Nachnamen daran, daß sie einmal Deutsche waren. Leider haben die Deutschamerikaner mit 1/3 der weißen amerikanischen Bevölkerung nichts getan, um das Los ihrer Landsleute abzumildern. Anders als die Italoamerikaner, die nach dem Krieg große Summen Geld sammelten für das kriegszerstörte Italien. Das ist ein sehr schmerzhafter Aspekt unseres Deutschtums. Deutschamerikaner haben nicht verhindert, daß die Roosevelt-Regierung Deutsche und Deutschstämmige aus (18 Ländern in) Lateinamerika entführte und in Internierungslager sperrte. Sie haben nicht dafür gesorgt, daß diese armen Menschen, deren Existenzen völlig zerstört waren, nach dem Kriege Reparationen erhielten. Betroffen waren angeblich etwa 4.500 Deutsche. Die größten Lager für die Entführungsopfer befanden sich in Texas. Die deutschamerikanischen Texaner haben keinen politischen Druck gemacht. Sie blieben passiv. Die amerikanische Regierung entschuldigte sich später nur bei den Japanamerikanern und zahlte ihnen Entschädigungen. Die Deutschen gingen leer aus. Das ist ein weiterer Schandfleck der amerikanischen jüngeren Geschichte.

During the war, German-Americans cowardly kept their mouths shut and did nothing to counter the American government’s propaganda. German-American mothers did not raise their children to be bilingual. In an act of contempt, they exchanged the far richer German – the language of poets and thinkers – for the impoverished Anglo-Saxon offshoot of German known as English. Often, only their surnames serve as a reminder that they were once German. Unfortunately, German-Americans, who make up a third of the white American population, did nothing to alleviate the plight of their compatriots. This is in contrast to the Italian-Americans, who raised large sums of money after the war for Italy, which had been devastated by the conflict. This is a very painful aspect of our German identity. German-Americans did not prevent the Roosevelt administration from abducting Germans and people of German descent from (18 countries in) Latin America and confining them to internment camps. They did not ensure that these poor people, whose livelihoods had been completely destroyed, received reparations after the war. Reportedly, around 4,500 Germans were affected. The largest camps for the victims of these abductions were located in Texas. The German-American Texans exerted no political pressure. They remained passive. The American government later apologised only to the Japanese-Americans and paid them compensation. The Germans came away empty-handed. This is another blot on America’s recent history.
Die Umerziehung der Deutschen wurde von Engländern ersonnen. Angeblich handelt es sich allerdings hier mal wieder um eine reine Verschwörungserzählung, daß dies in Bletchley Park geschah. Wo es sonst stattfand, ist nicht zu erfahren. So ausgeklügelt diese Maßnahme Schwarzer Pädagogik und getarnter irregulärer Kriegsführung war, ist mit einem jahrelangen Vorlauf zu rechnen und mit einer Menge an Spezialisten, und zwar den wirklich talentierten der Englisch sprechenden Welt. Daß es streng geheime Aktivitäten um die Entschlüsselung deutscher Kommunikation in Bletchley Park gab, ist erst 1974 durch eine Buchveröffentlichung und erst in der 90.er Jahren für die Öffentlichkeit bekannt geworden. Man fürchtete das Aufkommen einer neuen Dolchstoß-Legende. Seit langem zweifele ich an der Erzählung um diese Entschlüsselung. Erst einmal vermutete ich, daß ohne deutsche Mitwirkung es niemals zu diesem Ergebnis gekommen wäre. Außerdem vermutete ich, daß die Engländer an ein Original herangekommen sein müssen, und zwar durch deutschen Verrat. Daher habe ich genauer recherchiert. Es ging zunächst um die Verschlüsselung durch den Enigma-Kodierer. Ich möchte darauf hinweisen, daß die Angloamerikaner niemals zu einer ansprechenden eigenen Verschlüsselung gelangten. Der deutsche Unternehmer Arthur Ludolf Scherbius (1878 – 1929) hatte am 23.02.1918 das Patent für einen „Chiffrierapparat“ angemeldet und ihn später für zivile Zwecke verkauft, war damit aber nicht erfolgreich. 1927 interessierte sich das deutsche Heer für die Maschine, die daraufhin vom zivilen Markt genommen wurde. 1930 stellte man sie offiziell in den Dienst. Zunächst fiel mein Verdacht auf die Ehefrau von Arthur Scherbius Elisabeth, geborene Taaks (1896 – 1945), die sich während des Zweiten Weltkriegs im Widerstand gegen Hitler engagierte. Die Spur führte ins Leere. Doch dann stieß ich auf einen Deutschen, der sich aus Geldnot wegen seines luxuriösen Lebensstils und seiner teuren Geliebten an die Franzosen verdingte, und dort wichtige Militärgeheimnisse verriet. Als Verschlüsselungsspezialist gab Schmidt Schlüsseltechnik an die Franzosen weiter. Im Oktober 1931 lieferte er die Gebrauchsanleitung und die Schlüsselanleitung an die Franzosen, verriet auch geheime Schlüsseltafeln, die die Walzenlage, Ringstellung und Steckerverbindungen für die Monate September und Oktober 1932 enthielten. Sicherlich war es Schmidt möglich, von Kollegen und Spezialisten zur Kodierung direkte Informationen zu erhalten. Die Franzosen informierten die Polen, die drei Mathematiker und Verschlüsselungsspezialisten im militärischen Nachrichtendienst beauftragten, Nachbauten der Enigma-Maschinen zu erstellen. Oder besaßen sie vielleicht schon ein Original? 1939 flohen diese damit nach Frankreich und später nach England. Sie entwickelten zur Entschlüsselung die “Bomba”. Alan Turing machte als britischer Kryptologe daraus die “Turing-Bombe”. Ab Januar 1940 war Churchill imstande, alle Funksprüche und interne Kommunikation der Deutschen zu lesen. Nur durch Schlampereien und Nichtglauben im Französischen Generalstab scheiterte der Frankreichfeldzug noch nicht. So viele Geheimnisse zum Feldzug hatte Schmidt bis dahin verraten. Erwin Rommels Versagen im November 1942 ist dann schon darauf einzig und allein zurückzuführen. Hans-Thilo Schmitt wurde im März 1943 enttarnt und eingesperrt. Er nahm sich mit Gift, das seine Tochter in die Zelle schmuggelte, das Leben. Ohne diesen deutschen Verrat wäre Enigma niemals entschlüsselt worden. Stalin hatte seine Spione in den Pelz von Churchill setzen lassen und las alles, was Churchill las. Der ganze Rußlandfeldzug ist nur dadurch verlaufen wie er verlief. Stalin bekam aber seine Informationen noch durch viele weitere deutsche Verräter und Spione. Keine militärische Bewegung auf deutscher Seite konnte ohne Stalins Kenntnis erfolgen.

However sophisticated this measure of ‘black pedagogy’ and covert irregular warfare may have been, it would have required years of preparation and a large number of specialists – namely, the truly talented individuals from the English-speaking world. The fact that top-secret activities involving the decryption of German communications took place at Bletchley Park only came to light in 1974 following the publication of a book, and only became public knowledge in the 1990s. There were fears that a new ‘stab-in-the-back’ myth might emerge. I have long harboured doubts about the narrative surrounding this decryption. Initially, I suspected that this result could never have been achieved without German collaboration. Furthermore, I suspected that the British must have obtained an original copy, namely through German treachery. I therefore conducted more detailed research. My initial focus was on the encryption carried out by the Enigma machine. I would like to point out that the Anglo-Americans never managed to develop a viable encryption system of their own. The German entrepreneur Arthur Ludolf Scherbius (1878–1929) had applied for a patent for a ‘ciphering apparatus’ on 23 February 1918 and later sold it for civilian purposes, but was unsuccessful in doing so. In 1927, the German Army took an interest in the machine, which was subsequently withdrawn from the civilian market. It was officially put into service in 1930. My suspicions initially fell on Arthur Scherbius’s wife, Elisabeth, née Taaks (1896–1945), who was active in the resistance against Hitler during the Second World War. The trail led nowhere. But then I came across a German who, driven by financial hardship caused by his luxurious lifestyle and his expensive mistress, sold himself to the French and betrayed important military secrets there. As a cryptography specialist, Schmidt passed on key techniques to the French. In October 1931, he supplied the operating manual and the key instructions to the French, and also revealed secret key tables containing the rotor positions, ring settings and plug connections for the months of September and October 1932. Schmidt was undoubtedly able to obtain direct information on encryption from colleagues and specialists. The French informed the Poles, who commissioned three mathematicians and cryptography specialists in the military intelligence service to build replicas of the Enigma machines. Or did they perhaps already possess an original? In 1939, they fled with it to France and later to England. They developed the ‘Bomba’ to decrypt the messages. Alan Turing, a British cryptologist, turned this into the ‘Turing bomb’. From January 1940 onwards, Churchill was able to read all German radio messages and internal communications. It was only due to sloppiness and scepticism within the French General Staff that the French campaign had not yet failed. Schmidt had already revealed so many secrets about the campaign by then. Erwin Rommel’s failure in November 1942 can be attributed solely to this. Hans-Thilo Schmitt was unmasked and imprisoned in March 1943. He took his own life with poison that his daughter had smuggled into his cell. Without this German betrayal, Enigma would never have been decrypted. Stalin had planted his spies right in Churchill’s inner circle and read everything that Churchill read. The entire Russian campaign unfolded as it did solely because of this. However, Stalin also obtained his information through many other German traitors and spies. No military manoeuvre on the German side could take place without Stalin’s knowledge.
